This is the feeling of happiness: The sun rises over the cliffs of the Algarve, and you're brewing a delightful cup of coffee in your van. The sound of waves filters through the open car door as you contemplate whether today calls for surfing or lounging in the sun. On a laid-back road trip along the rugged Algarve in the south of Portugal, anything is possible. We unveil seven must-visit stops for your journey along the coastline.
1. Slumber in a Pine Forest
Ericeira Camping, a dream for sea enthusiasts, is strategically located near numerous fantastic beaches, offering the perfect setting for surfing. Amid fragrant pine trees and friendly, like-minded neighbors, relax at the campsite before plunging into the waves with your surfboard.
2. Splash around at Ponta da Piedade
Experience the picturesque Algarve in all its (rocky) forms and colors! Explore the stunning coastal landscape of the "Land's End of Piety" on foot (don't forget your camera): narrow paths along the red, up to 40-meter-high cliffs lead to beach coves like Praia Dona Ana or Praia do Camilo. The highlight is the lighthouse at the tip of the headland, perched above rugged cliffs with bizarre caves, domes, and towers. A stone staircase descends to a spectacular boat dock in the midst of a cave, where you can embark on a boat tour along the coast at the right tide.
3. Admire the Sunset at Praia da Lagoa
Surrounded by rust-red cliffs and a pine forest, Praia da Lagoa offers the perfect backdrop for van life. No wonder it's one of the most popular spots for campers in Portugal. Park on the cliff's edge, hang a hammock in the pine forest, and enjoy a direct sea view. With just a short leap, you're on the beach and in the sea. Here, you'll quickly meet like-minded individuals to end the day with a beer, make plans, and exchange experiences.
4. Surf on Perfect Atlantic Waves
The vast sandy beach of Praia de Bordeira, with its crashing Atlantic waves, is a paradise for wind and kite surfers. Swimming may not be the best idea, as wind and waves are formidable. The lagoon is shielded from the sea by a dune. Walk a bit along the marked long-distance trail Rota Vicentina, and from the hilltop, you'll have superb views of the entire beach. Theoretically, you could even hike to the next beach (about 7 km), or you can simply take the dirt road. After all, you always have your vehicle with you on the road trip.
5. Stroll through Picturesque Fishing Villages
The small fishing town of Olhão is refreshingly non-touristy. Lose yourself in the labyrinthine streets of the old town among tiny, idyllic squares and white, cubic houses. Explore the vast market halls with numerous fish stalls, and at the harbor, witness fishermen bring in and sell their catch. Along the lively waterfront, observe the "true Algarvian hustle and bustle" and savor delicious specialties in the many restaurants redolent of grilled fish.
6. Enjoy Island Life on Culatra
Take a ferry from Olhão to the offshore island of Culatra. There, you'll find delightful beaches, charming fishing houses, and delicious restaurants serving fresh fish. However, leave your van on the mainland, as the entire island is car-free. The fishing harbor in the main village of Culatra is particularly picturesque. The western part of the island is called Ilha do Farol (Lighthouse Island) by the locals because an impressive lighthouse has stood there since 1851. On Wednesday afternoons, you can visit the white-red beauty with its dizzying platform at almost 50 meters above ground—the view over the islands, the lagoon, and the sea is simply breathtaking.
7. Wander through the Mystical Cave of Benagil
One of the most spectacular sea caves in the Algarve is located at Praia de Benagil. To marvel at the mighty rock walls from the inside, consider renting a kayak or bringing your SUP and paddling right through the enormous arches into the cave. You can also swim to the cave from the beach – the distance is just under 100 meters. But beware: Benagil Cave can only be visited during low tide. When the tide rises, the water masses can quickly block the exit.
